Tabla Intensives in Boulder Colorado

Winter Retreat ~ March 12th - 15th ,  2009

Summer Retreat ~ July 30th - August 2nd ,  2009

Each day we will learn the foundations of the inspired tradition of Indian tabla. Ty has designed this intensive to span material pertinent for beginners as well as intermediate level players. Everyone is welcome! Whether your interest in tabla lies in classical accompaniment/solo, kirtan/bhajan or western fusion, clarity of technique and tone production are paramount. We will also explore our visions within music; the rhythms within ourselves, each other and the environment around us.

The intensive includes 20 hours of instruction, and a complimentary pass to a Classical Indian concert with Ty and guests on Saturday evening. This will be a unique opportunity to wholeheartedly immerse yourself into the world of tabla!

Material to be covered:
  • Learn proper classical technique.
  • Create better tone production and fluency.
  • Speak the syllables used to represent the sounds on the tabla.
  • Play the basic rhythm cycles used in accompaniment for both classical & folk/devotional music.
  • Learn compositions from the main categories of classical tabla solo tradition (Peshkar/Kaida/Rela/Gat).
  • Discuss basic principles of practice.
  • Explore the meditative/yogic possibilities inherent in the art form.
