I am proud to announce the new CD by my Tokyo based trio, YO. The word YO means “World Community / Our Generation / Songs of the People” and, in this spirit, we want to explore the evolution of these ancient traditions as they interface with today’s culture and the diverse minds of our world community.

The music on this first album is purely acoustic and exposes the traditional sounds of each of our instruments while musically reaching into completely new territory.

ABOUT THE FORMATION OF YO

Our first meeting was in 2012 at a concert in Tokyo. We were brought together spontaneously by the vision of a concert producer and found ourselves on stage, in a completely new musical setting. However, within the first few minutes of playing together, we knew that there was a very special creative spark between us.

At that time, we each were very busy in our own musical careers and didn’t know if we would have the chance to explore this unusual and exciting collaboration, but as fate would have it, we have been able to grow ourYO-ness with a few concerts in Japan and several US tours since that time.

This is our first installment of what we hope to be a series of album releases. We have many musical visions, sounds and special guests that we want to share with you in the coming albums, but for this first debut project we wanted to share the pure, uneffected sounds of our three acoustic, very traditional instruments woven into the sound of YO.

REVIEWS:

YO - Weaving One World is an uplifting, lucid, and cheerful album that showcases 3 acoustic traditional instruments: the shamisen, a banjo-like instrument from Japan, the shakuhachi, the Japanese flute, and the tabla, the melodic set of drums from North India. Each one of the 8 compositions is melodically and rhythmically brilliant, weaving in and out the unique voices of these 3 instruments in a surprisingly delightful and accessible manner. Each instrument remains easily identifiable even during the most intricate parts, allowing different listening experiences depending on which instrument you pay attention to at any one time. With this debut album, the YO trio clearly demonstrates the mastery of their craft and their capacity to take their traditional instruments into a new and fresh musical territory that will surely please experts and attract new fans.
