Summer Tabla Retreats in Boulder 2014

August 9th & 10th - BEGINNERS INTENSIVE
10-1pm & 3-6pm on Both Days
This retreat is for complete beginners or those who are still developing good basic technique. We will go over the fundamental strokes, basic combinations and a couple of core rhythm cycles. We will discover the joy of creating the beautiful sounds possible on tabla. Everyone is welcome!

August 14th eve - 17th - INTERMEDIATE INTENSIVE
5-8pm Thursday evening / 10-1pm & 3-6pm on Friday - Sunday
This retreat is for those of you who have been playing a while and want to focus in on technique, clarity and core material. We will focus on developing basic accompaniment, expression and putting together your portfolio of practice material material.

10-1pm & 3-6pm on Monday
This retreat is for tabla players who have a clear understanding of the tabla tradition and have a grasp of peshkar / kaida / rela / gat. Anyone is welcome, but the class will be directed towards higher level students who are performing classical music.

Saturday 10-1 & 3-6
Fundamentals (learning the basic strokes)

Sunday 10-1 & 3-6
Fundamentals (refining stokes & creating your own practice)

Thursday 5-8
Fundamentals (review)
We now have fundamentals specific to levels of learning.

Friday 10-1
Fundamentals (break into groups)
Ty will go around and help individuals as the groups review fundamentals specific to their group.

Friday 3-6
Vocalizing Tabla
We will focus on speaking our repertoire (Zakir recommended this to us)

Saturday 10-1 3-6
Accompaniment (theka refinement)
Guest instrumentalist plays with each student in private, separate room while we continue working on accompaniment skills. At the end of this session, a few students may play with guest artist in front of the class.

Sunday 10-1
Fusion (grooves for non-classical music)
We'll look at how to put together your tabla part in a fusion situation.

Sunday 3-6
Review / Practice Vision

Monday 10-1 3-6
Peshkar / Kaida / Rela / Gat
We will be moving at a good clip so we can cover some interesting material.

What you'll need:
A set of tabla
A notebook (audio recorders allowed).
A willingness to visualize your limitless potential.

Ordering Tabla:
If you do not yet own your own set of tabla, or you'd like a new one, then please email ty@tyburhoe.com - but try to order at least a month and a half before the retreat since they are custom made in India and need to be shipped.

During Breaks from Tabla Class:
Come a day early or stay a day later - Hit the foothills for an invigorating hike on the spectacular nearby trails, swim in one of the many mountain creeks (summer :), rent mountain bikes, shop the local boutiques on the famous Pearl Street Mall, or discover Boulder's world class coffee shops serving the best cappuchino outside of Italy.
